Which signature guitar works for you?

There are mixed feelings in the guitaring community about signature models -they are customised for another person, not you, and cost alot more because of the name on them. Heres a few of the signature guitars out there for the 'metallers'.

The Dimebag range from Dean Guitars. While most guitarists have one signature guitar -Pantera and Damageplan's guitarist has had thirty three done in his honour. After his death in 2004 Dean decided not to let the guitarists name go into obsuricty and bought out a large range of Dimebag Darrell guitars. The pickups in the guitar depends on the age -newer ones feature the 'Dimebucker', instead of EMGs. Basically depending on which of the two types of pickups it comes down to suggests that basically take your pick over what you think looks better. If you worship at the alter of Pantera, these are the guitars for you, with prices ranging from £219 to £3500, so make your choice wisely.

The BC Rich Kerry King (Slayer) range. Also having more than one signature guitar is Slayer Guitarist Kerry King. Available as either a flying V or Explorer shaped guitar as well, painted with tribal designs to match his head tattoos, these guitars look as mean as their owner, but how do they sound? Not bad, they certainly go along way to helping you achieve that harsh 'Slayer' guitar tone.  With BC Rich's special pickups to, you can see that some thought has gone into these guitars.

Jackson guitars Demolition model. Created with help from Phil Demell of Machine head, this guitar is truly a beast to be reckoned with. With a flying V shape and EMG pickups, this guitar is going to tear you a new one in your quest for the ultimate tone. Expensive, but to say at the least at £1100, if you have that kind of money I suggest you buy you now -those that dont, sell your organs online to get the money.

Guitar building: What to remember about doing it

So, your obsessed with guitars to an almost unhealthy point - there the first and last thing you think about during the day. You get withdrawal symptoms every day you dont play and your living of tins of beans in order just to save the money to buy a new guitar. But now that you've considered building your own dream guitar - so just what work will go into building it?

  • The cost. This isnt going to be cheap -you've got to consider the prices of the wood for the body and the neck, the pickups, the electronics if your building an electric guitar,  this is going to be pricey for you. Think about the tools you are going to need do build your dream guitar, as special tools will be needed for cutting out the body.
  • Practice. If your not naturally good with using tools or have never done this before, i recommend having a bit of practice. In whatever you do you wont be amazing straight away, and if you start on expensive wood, any mistakes you make can be costly to your wallet. By getting to grips with the tools and cutting on cheaper wood you'll save time when you come to do it for real. Once you get to the point of making you guitar, all the practice will pay off.
  • Wiring. This is for the guys building an electric guitar, because sooner or later, you are going to have to deal with the electronics. Try very hard not to electrocute yourself, as getting the wiring wrong can do just this. Get a experienced electrician to look over your work before you insert it into the guitar and 'send it live'.

These are just a few things to consider, but if thats too much work you can always just buy electric guitars from these guys.
